IRR. APP. (EXT.) + THE RECORDISTS

Matt Waldron' s current monthly digital single series is based on material from the long-defunct Nine Day Antler Society web project  which ran from 2012 - 2014 and included contributions from irr. app. (ext.), At Jennie Richie, R. K. Faulhaber, Thomas Carnacki, The Recordists (myself and S.Higgins), Eriijk Rêssler / Swastika Novelty Co. and Crank Sturgeon. Not surprisingly, the monthly digital single series is focused on reissuing the irr. app. (ext.) NDAS contributions, but a few also involve collaborators. Which brings us to the reason for this post as the October edition features a collaboration between irr. app. (ext.) and The Recordists!

BRUME COMP

I have a track (as Songs of the New Erotics) on "Études de l'oeuvre de Christian Renou en Brume," a great new comp from Institute For Alien Research. The album is a tribute of sorts to the music of Brume/Christian Renou. Christian Renou is one of my favourite artists and I've been a fan of his music for several decades. I had a lot of fun putting this track together (which includes a few samples from some of my favourite Brume albums). Enjoy!

TAPES, TAPES, TAPES!

Just finished digitizing two major components of my audio archive - the "Tape Sketchbook" series which consists of various studio experiments, song sketches and finished compositions, field recordings, raw material for sound collage, etc., numbering in the thousands and dating back to the early 80s + my four-track cassettes which contain the master recordings for many of the aforementioned works. 144 stereo "Tape Sketchbooks" + 65 four-track tapes + another 23 four-track cassette masters from the 80s belonging to my old pal Gregory Clifford Denton (including some of my compositions and many recordings I contributed to) for a grand total of 232 cassettes! It's a lot, and it was a huge amount of work! I may eat a fancy dessert in celebration.

Of course, there are at least another hundred or so miscellaneous cassettes + equally sizable collections of DATs, mini-discs, open reel tapes, VHS tapes, mini-dv, and every other recording format imaginable still to be digitized. A lot of work ahead of me but I felt this was enough of a milestone that I should shout it from the rooftops. Feel free to shout along with me, or at least have a piece of cake!

BROMTOL LARGESSE ANNIVERSARY

Pleased to announce my inclusion in a new digital album called "Anniversary" which, not surprisingly, marks the first-year anniversary of the Bromtol Largesse label! I contributed a track which was improvised and recorded in the early 2000s by me and my friend Amanda Holmes working under the name Ballooners. Ballooners has been little more than a concept and a handful of trial recordings and rehearsals (of which this track "Nine" is) for more than 25 years. This is the first "official" public appearance of the project. I guess it's a thing now!

WINDOW 3

Very pleased to announce the release of "Window 3" by Wax Infant on the CEIL label!
https://waxinfant.bandcamp.com/releases
"Window 3" is the third in a series of four performances that took place at the International Bureau of Recordist Investigation in Toronto in the mid to late 90s. These performances were casual, impromptu audio improvisations that were amplified via a "boombox" placed in the window which projected the sounds into the street for an audience of random passersby.
"Window 3" was improvised and recorded live to cassette by Wax Infant (William A. Davison and Jim DeJong), Nov. 7th, 1995 at I.B.R.I., 797 Ossington Ave., Toronto. Jim played feedback machine and tapes. William played tapes, Casio SK-1 sampler, toys and acoustic instruments, and microphone feedback.
Other performances in the series (yet to be released) included W.A.Davison solo, Phycus (Brian Damage and Bill Satan), and Urban Refuse Group (Robert Atwood, Colin Hinz, S. Higgins, Marc Lemyre, and William Davison).

OLIVE/CAMERON/DAVISON

As part of Audiopollination 72, I will be performing a set of improvised sounds with Allison Cameron and Tim Olive.

Audiopollination 72

Sat. June 1, 8 - 10pm

Tranzac Tiki Room

292 Brunswick Ave., Toronto

Taking place in the intimate living room feel of the Tranzac's tiki room, audiopollination presents a night of Tim Olive (Japan), Montreal sound makers Elizabeth Millar, Craig Pederson and Anne-F Jacques, and Toronto musicians Mira Martin-Gray, MKL32, Mark Zurawinski, Allison Cameron and William Davison mixing it up for some improvised mayhem.

8 to 10 pm PWYC (but $10 would be sweet)
Event art by Jamie Thompson
Set 1: MKL32, Anne-F Jacques and Elizabeth Millar
Set 2: Craig Pederson, Mira Martin-Gray and Mark Zurawinski
Set 3: Tim Olive, Allison Cameron and William Davison
Bios for visiting musicians
Tim Olive (Japan), tabletop guitar
https://timolive.org
https://845audio.org/
The music of Tim Olive arises from collaboration with fellow
musicians/sound artists, collaboration with physical and temporal setting, and collaboration with those involved in the act of listening. Using simple materials (including magnetic pickups, steel strings, tuning forks, metal strips, hand-wound motor mechanisms, magnetic tape, dental floss and analog electronics), Olive’s work is predicated on the interplay of the human with material/time/space, and the uniqueness, intensity and unrepeatability that lives in each performing and/or recording situation.
He is interested in music as a social activity, as a way of creating community, a way of countering the forces which lead to an increasing atomization of contemporary life; music as a felt experience rather than as a concept or a theory.
A Canadian residing in Kobe, Japan, Olive has released music on Japanese, European and North American labels, with Jeff Allport, Cristian Alvear, Pascal Battus, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Samuel Dunscombe, Nick Hoffman, Anne-F Jacques, Jin Sangtae, Jason Kahn, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Yukinori Kikuchi, Cal Lyall, Francisco Meirino, Katsura Mouri, Takuji Naka, Bunsho Nishikawa, Makoto Oshiro, Ben Owen, Horacio Pollard, Fritz Welch, and Yan Jun.

Anne-F Jacques, amplified rotating objects
http://anne-fff.tumblr.com/ An inventory of objects and materials with which author, sound artist, Anne-F Jacques makes sound and visual creations. Through their weight, texture and individual history, she retraces a small part of their story
and immerses the reader in a microcosm of stubborn objects. She is interested in things that turn, in rough sounds, erratic movements, building precarious structures and idiosyncrasies. Sounds and other found things. She lives and works in Montreal.

Elizabeth Millar, breath, machine hums, metal surfaces, air, fans, propellers and clarinet
emillar.net Elizabeth Millar is a sound-artist, clarinetist and performer, based in Montreal since 2009. Engaging with experimental music, sound art, noise, free improvisation and self-made instrument building, her creative
practice explores the merging of acoustic and electronic textures with amplification and extended techniques. Active locally, nationally and internationally she has performed throughout Canada and in Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. She is a member of Sound of the Mountain, an amplified clarinet and trumpet duo with Craig
Pedersen. Her latest solo work ‘no instrument machine, air’ is now out on Mystery & Wonder Records (mwrecs.com).

Craig Pedersen, amplified trumpet www.craigpedersen.com
Craig Pedersen is trumpet player, and experimenting musician living in Montréal. He plays in the collaborative duos Sound of the Mountain (with Elizabeth Millar) and Provisional Mailorder (with Anne-F Jacques). He is a member of Ensemble Supermusique and the Ratchet Orchestra. He also
occasionally leads the Craig Pedersen Quartet, a band featuring Linsey Wellman (fetNAT), Bennett Bedoukian (Horseman, Pass By) and Thierry Amar GY!BE).
Since 2011, Craig has released thirteen albums, or more, ranging between composed material to improvisation. An active and avid touring artist, he has played across Canada, in Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia and Mexico.Recent highlights of his work includes collaborations and/or performances with Toshimaru Nakamura, Tetuzi Akiyama, Shinkan Tamaki, Zhao Cong, Yong Yandsen, Gudinni Cortina, Manfred Werder, Pauline Oliveros, Jean Derome, Joane Hetu, Ian Birse and Laura Kavanaugh (Instant Places), Vicky Mettler, Bennett Bedoukian and Mark Molnar, as well as many others. His current interests lay in collaboration, impractical mail-order cassettes, holding long notes and the notions of developing an improvisational language as a form of composition.

GLANDS OF EXTERNAL SECRETION

Six Heads will be breaking their hiatus of several years to participate in this event surrounding the Toronto appearance of Glands Of External Secretion, sharing the bill with Glands, Brian Ruryk and Agar Agar.

From a recent press release:

GLANDS OF EXTERNAL SECRETION (https://coherentstates.bandcamp.com/album/convicted-felon-adjusted-for-inflation)
Experimental collage duo of Barbara Manning (World of Pooh, SF Seals) & Seymour Glass (Bananafish) create vocal driven collaged compositions on the verge of collapse, with all the vigour & buoyancy of life. Errant keys chime out over the heavy breathing of taxed strings, collapsing under their own weight. Warped vocal repeat, everything that was once real is now a temporary facsimile. Manning & Glass toy with reality as tape loops sway revealing crippled notes and reeling vocal phrases. Charred sounds, cracks and clips take over only fall victim to the next disintegration. The duo rebuilds as fast as they tear apart playing with a sound until it's worn out like a cat, then moving onto the next one. Endlessly enticing. Not to be missed. Hainey put them out once!
BRIAN RURYK
Toronto avant garde anti-legend Brian Ruryk is easily one of the city's best kept secrets, Ruryk has been manipulating the concepts of sound since the 80s. Free jangled guitar notes spray over a live collage of junk percussion & chaos. Tape samples squeal out amongst herky jerky clatter of Ruryk’s eclectic set up. Much like the coming together of puzzle pieces in a way in which they do not fit, then experiencing the process in which the puzzler, instead of sorting the pieces, just cuts & mangles them to create a new image.
AGAR AGAR
New improv. telekinetic electro-acoustic positive force assembled from your favourite Toronto avant minglers. Allison Cameron on amplified objects, toys, baby guitars, uke, electronics, joined by percussionist / creative thinker Germaine Liu, and collage electronics, tape looper Andrew Zukerman (Fleshtone Aura). These three composer / improvisor hybrids team up for the first time (hopefully not the last) to bring you the soul searching sonic force you've been waiting for!
SIX HEADS (http://www.recordism.com/SixHeads/SixHeads.html)
Toronto electro-acoustic table top noise collage crew featuring the likes of James Bailey, William Davison, Linda Feesey, Sherri Lyn Higgins, Colin Hinz, Pete Mosher. A cohesive environment created from a patchwork of minds sewing together the creaks, drips, oscillations, internal howlings and unexpected rhythms of their careful manipulations. The forming of a versatile beast, carefully composed sonic gestures help birth a new image of the creature. Don't miss this rare Six Heads jam, 19 years strong!

ELECTRONIC COTTAGE COMPILATION 004

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, Hal McGee published Electronic Cottage magazine, one of the premier DIY magazines dedicated to Cassette Culture. In addition to six issues of the magazine published between 1989 and 1991, Hal also released three Electronic Cottage various artists compilations on cassette. Early in 2018, Hal revived the Electronic Cottage project in the form of an online magazine, forum and community - https://www.electroniccottage.org/

Today, the 4th Electronic Cottage various artists compilation (CD-R and digital album) has been released by Electronic Cottage and Haltapes! I have a track on it, along with 33 other members of the EC community. Contributors include:

IT'S NOT ME, IT'S YOU

Also released on Friday the 13th this month (see my previous post about Electronic Cottage Compilation 004), is another great comp from Neal Retke's panpanpanaviandistresscall label. This one is called "It's Not Me, It's You" and features 17 artists doing cover versions of tracks from the {AN} Eel Soundcloud page ( https://soundcloud.com/nealretke ). My input on this one includes the title, cover art, and track #2 which is my cover version of Neal's cover version of "Endless Blockades For The Pussyfooter" by G.I.S.M.

NAKATANI GONG ORCHESTRA

918 Bathurst St., Toronto
$20 Regular

PLUS
Deep Listening Intensive
featuring Anne Bourne, 3PM

In recent years, the Music Gallery has devoted more time and resources to the presentation of adventurous, participatory musical systems. We have seen scores of local musicians from all walks of life learn from the masterful musical concepts of the likes of Pauline Oliveros, Adam Rudolph, Roscoe Mitchell and Katy Payne. We continue this sensibility here in presenting NGO, Tatsuya Nakatani’s Gong Orchestra (NGO), a contemporary live sound art project that tours throughout North and Central America.
Osaka-born, New Mexico-based Nakatani began germinating ideas for NGO in early 2002, and finally took the project on the road in April 2011. NGO is a continuous, growing community engagement project; and the only bowing gong orchestra in existence in the world today. The rich harmonies produced from multiple layers of bowed gongs are transformative, engaging and inspiring for both players and audiences.
As per Nakatani’s instructions, the Music Gallery curates an ensemble of local players to play his handmade gongs, bows and other instrumentation that travel with him from town to town. We've contacted a wide range of local musicians and artists to create a one-of-a-kind ensemble:
Artist, filmmaker and author Brenda Joy Lem
Katie Jensen (Baby Cages, Feast In The East, Polaris Prize podcast)
Sound artist Debashis Sinha
"Song farmer" Charlotte Cornfield (Burdock booker)
Rupert Ojiji Harvey (founder of Messenjah and Crack of Dawn)
Kristyn Gelfand (Maracatu Mar Alberto)
Filipina-Canadian MC extraordinaire HanHan
Alex Punzalan (DATU)
Alex Bordokas (Maracatu Mar Alberto, Uma Nota)
W. A. Davison (Recordism)
Treson (The Human Rights)
Graphic designer/musician Jenn Kitagawa (Eyeballs)
Bryan Bray (Gates/Cetacea)
On the day of the concert, Nakatani conducts a specialized training workshop to these players in preparation for the performance. Players experience Nakatani’s unique point of view regarding gong techniques, and learn to work with the immersive vibrations of these special instruments. With as many as 14 gongs in play at any one time, the walls and ceiling of 918 Bathurst will shimmer with beautiful resonances and community feeling.
Nakatani performs a solo set to open the evening, then returns to conduct his own compositions for the group performance.
This event is sponsored by Spirit of Math
Deep Listening Intensive with Anne Bourne, 3PM
This day begins by opening the airy, light-filled environs of 918 Bathurst’s Sun Room to the public for a springtime celebration and/or contemplation. Anne Bourne returns to conduct the second Deep Listening Intensive of our season: she will lead participants in experiential listening meditations and sounding pieces composed by the late Pauline Oliveros. This is a FREE event, no ticket purchase or reservation is required.
